POISSON D’AVRIL – APRIL FOOL’S DAY

Nous sommes le 1er avril, et c’est la journée du poisson d’avril.

It is traditionally the day of the year when playing pranks on people is a vital component to the day. En France il faut accrocher un poisson en papier dans le dos des personnes (In France, you must pin a paper fish on the back of people)  that we want to prank. The amount of words that the French have to describe a joke is no joke! We decided to share a few with you here:

Une farce – A joke – Faire une farce

Un tour  – A joke  – Jouer un tour

Canuler – To play a prank

Une blague de potache – a schoolboy prank

Une blagounette – a little joke

Galéjer – to joke

Arrête ton charre – stop your messing

Une blague en carambar – a joke which is in bad taste

Une blague – a joke

Une plaisanterie – a Joke

Une entourloupette – a trick / a ruse

Une facétie – A joke

Une clownerie – an antic/prank

Une attrape – a practical joke or party trick

Once you play your prank, you then shout out “Poisson D’avril” and the person on the receiving end quickly realises that, Il s’est fait avoir – he was caught out or he was had!
